Established in 1981, Sun Wave Fashions emerged as a prominent player in the Florida-coast t-shirt printing scene. Situated in the heart of historic St. Andrews at 1010 Beck Avenue, Sun Wave specialized in both custom and souvenir apparel for over three decades. Their extensive array of designs became iconic fixtures at local restaurants and events, adorning patrons with memories from the relaxed ambiance of Salty’s Beach Bar to the spirited celebrations of Hamilton’s Cajun Fest. Additionally, their souvenir line was showcased in National sportswear tradeshows and found at popular beach shops in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Locally, they were top sellers at Alvin’s Island and Shipwreck Ltd. and dozens of mom-and-pop gift shops on Panama City Beach.
The Windsurfing design epitomizes the essence of Sun Wave Fashions’ heyday. Seeing these designs live on, with sellers originating from distant locales like the Windsurfing example resurfacing in Malaysia and the Palms shirt finding a new home in Texas, underscores the enduring global allure of these nostalgic motifs. Indeed, this windsurfing emblem, once a hallmark of 80s fashion, continues to captivate beach lovers with its timeless allure.
In the 70s, windsurfing was a new and colorful sport, and by the mid-80s, it had become an Olympic competition. Its aquatic appeal and brightly hued sails contribute to its timeless allure, explaining why our windsurfing design continues to captivate beach lovers today.
Inspired by the beloved pastime of tourists cruising along Front Beach Road, the “Cruisin’ the Strip” t-shirt emerged as another iconic design for Sun Wave. It quickly soared to become one of our best-selling shirts throughout the 80s and 90s. This design resonated with teenagers behind the wheel of their dad’s Buick, as well as with seasoned drivers who reminisced about the earliest days of the cruising trend.
Today, cruising still occurs along Front Beach Road, albeit with a different atmosphere compared to the vibrant days when Miracle Strip Amusement Park dominated the beachfront skyline. While the enthusiasm may have shifted, the nostalgia captured by the “Cruisin’ the Strip” design endures, serving as a timeless reminder of the lively spirit that once defined Panama City Beach.
